Frequently asked questions

Everything you might want to know before you split your first bill.

What is Dutcho?

Dutcho is a free app for splitting shared expenses with friends, roommates and travel groups. You add an expense, it works out who owes what, keeps a running balance, and lets you settle up over UPI in a tap.

How do I add an expense?

Three ways: type it in plain words ("1200 dinner with Sam, I paid") and Dutcho fills in the details; snap a photo of the receipt and it reads the total and items; or forward a message straight from WhatsApp and it becomes an expense. You can always adjust the amount, people and split before saving.

Can I split a bill unequally?

Yes. Split equally, enter exact amounts per person, or split a receipt item by item — with tax and tip spread proportionally so the parts always add up to the exact total. See our guide on which way to split a bill.

How does settling up work?

When you owe someone (or they owe you), Dutcho shows the exact amount and, for UPI payments in India, hands you the person's UPI ID or a scannable QR — so paying is a tap in GPay, PhonePe, Paytm or BHIM. You then record the payment, and everyone's balance updates. The money moves through your own UPI app; Dutcho keeps the books.

Do my friends need the app too?

Not necessarily. You can add people who aren't on Dutcho as guests, and still track what they owe. It works best when everyone's on it — balances stay in sync on both sides and either person can record a payment — but you're never blocked from splitting with someone who hasn't joined.

What are groups for?

Groups keep related expenses together — a trip, a flat, a regular crew. Everyone in the group sees the shared balances, and Dutcho simplifies the debts so the group settles up in the fewest possible payments.

Is Dutcho free?

Yes, Dutcho is free to download and use for splitting bills and settling up.

Is my information private?

Yes. Dutcho collects only what it needs to make the app work and never sells your personal information. Finding friends by phone number matches only the numbers you already have, and never exposes other people's contact details. Full details are in our Privacy Policy.

Which platforms is Dutcho on?

Dutcho is available for iPhone and iPad on the App Store, and for Android via a quick guided install (and rolling out on Google Play). You'll find both options on the home page.

Does it work outside India?

You can split and track expenses anywhere. The one-tap UPI settle-up is specific to India; elsewhere you record payments made by whatever method you use.

How do I get started?

Download the app, add your first expense in a few words, and add the people you split with. That's it — the running balance takes care of itself from there.
